Coding in Digital Humanities

Digital Humanities is using technology to further communication and make history more accessible to research and learn. Coding involves learning and typing script to modify a website and customize functions. While in my DH 390 course, I have been learning to code in HTML and CSS; simply coding basic introductions and customizing HTML to understand all the tools available to me. Coding is important to learn as a digital humanist because it provides good base work to understanding technology and teaches how to make a website cleaner and understandable.

“Programming is about choices and constraints, and about how you choose to model some select slice of the world around you in the formal environment of a computer” (Kirschenbaum).

While creating my HTML and CSS website, it was very similar to R programming, which I have basic experience in. I had a fairly easy time adjusting in HTML and enjoyed the customization in CSS. I think without the provided PowerPoint resources I would have had a very hard time finding the script for little details like bold word, italicize, and color.
